CALL BY MR TANAKA, JAPANESE EMBASSY: 2 FEBRUARY

A review of bilateral relations revealed nothing new except (possibly) the Japanese intention to put to the UK/Japan 2000 Group the suggestion that they should recommend the holding of a prestigious Japanese/British symposium in the UK, financed by the new allocation which the Embassy have extracted from the Japanese MFA.
Mr Tanaka said that he had no firm views about the subject of the symposium though the Embassy were toying with the alternatives of "The Quality of Life" and "The Bridge between Europe and Asia". He would welcome any suggestions from us.

Mr Tanaka made a rather studied pitch about permanent membership of the Security Council. He referred to Warren Christopher's recent remarks and commented that member states had been asked by the UN Secretary General
