for another major event to follow up the Japan festival. They were thinking of a possible repeat of the successful 1910 Exhibition on Science and Technology Exchanges. Sir Hugh Cortazzi said that April 2000 would mark the 400th Anniversary of the first Briton in Japan. He also mentioned the forthcoming wedding of the Crown Prince and Princess. The link with this country through their studies at Oxford would certainly raise the profile of the UK in Japan at the time of the wedding.

The Prime Minister closed the meeting by offering to send a letter by hand of Mr. Howell to Mr Miyazawa. Mr. Howell welcomed this.
