LETTER FROM THE PRIME MINISTER TO PRIME MINISTER MIYAZAWA OF JAPAN

[ Contribution on HONG KONG ]

26

On the question of Hong Kong, I am most grateful for the support and help Japan has continued to give us and Chris Patten in recent months. This has been a difficult time in our relations with China, but we hope that it will be possible to resolve our differences through discussion. The Chinese have now agreed in principle to talks and we are pursuing the detailed arrangements. I am very grateful that Japan has been willing to stress privately to China the importance of Hong Kong's stability and prosperity, and that Chinese attacks on it undermine business confidence in the "One Country Two Systems" policy. I hope you would be willing to take further opportunities to put this message across.
