TERMS OF REFERENCE FOR THE EXPERT ON SEARCH AND RESCUE

To consider and recommend, as appropriate, on all matters related to preventing or combating acts of piracy and armed robbery against ships by the use of available search and rescue facilities, including but not limited to:
Examining the adequacy of the general principles for ship reporting systems (IMO Assembly resolution A.648(16)) for dealing with reporting of attacks on ships;
Recommending, if necessary, any modifications to resolution A.648(16) or the development of a standard reporting system specifically for ships under attack by pirates;
Recommending a suitable arrangement either within the MRCC or
elsewhere within the Port Administration concerned for receiving and acting on reports of attacks from ships;
Considering means of improving the sharing of information between neighbouring MRCCs;
Preparing an operating guidance for masters of ships to enable them to quickly report attacks using available communication systems;
and
Considering whether any further action can be taken by IMO on reports on piracy and armed robbery received by the Secretariat and presently circulated by MSC/Circ.577 series.
