The Protocol amending the Brussels Convention ("the 1968 Prosocal") was ratified by the United Kingdom on 1 October 1976 and

was extended to Hong Kong with effect from 1 February 1981.

A Protocol further amending the Brussels Convention ("the 1979 Protocol") was ratified by the United Kingdom on 2 March 1382

and was extended to Hong Kong on 20 October 1983.

In order to give effect to the Brussels Convention as amended by the 1968 Protocol (together known as "the Hague-Visby Rules") the United Kingdom enacted the Carriage of Goods by Sea Act,

1971 ("the 1971 Act"). In order to give effect in Hong Kong to the Hague-Visby Rules the United Kingdom extended certain provisions of the 1971 Act to Hong Kong by the Carriage of Goods by Sea (Hong Kong) Order 1980 and the Carriage of Goods by Sea (Hong Kong)

(Amendment) order 1980 ("the 1980 Orders").

In order to give effect to the 1979 Protocol the United Kingdom enacted certain provisions of the Merchant Shipping Act 1981

"the 1981 Act"). In order to give effect in Hong Kong to the 1979 Protocol the United Kingdom extended those provisions of the 1981

Act to Hong Kong by the Carriage of Goods by Sea (Hong Kong) Order

1982 ("the 1982 Order"). The provisions of the 1971 Act and of the

1981 Act as applied to Hong Kong by the 1980 Orders and the 1982

Order a present constitute part of the law of Hong Kong but will

lapse on 30 June 1997.
