This statement is untrue and it

reflects a substantial lack of

understanding of the real situation in Hong Kong. We do not have a "Victoria Prison Hospital". Pregnant women, who are

detained in detention centres located in

the remote outlying islands, are normally transferred upon reaching their 32nd week of pregnancy to the Kai Tak Vietnamese Migrant Transit Centre (KTVMTC) where they

await admission into the Queen Elizabeth

Hospital for delivery. The close

relatives of the pregnant women are also transferred to KTVMTC where the family are kept together for the entire period. Pregnant women who are detained in

detention centres located in the main

urban areas, such as the Whitehead

Detention Centre and the High Island

Detention Centre, are directly admitted to the Prince of Wales Hospital for delivery of their children. As a normal practice,

their husbands and children are also

allowed to visit them in hospital. There is therefore no question of pregnant women being prevented from seeing their husbands and children until after they have given

birth.

Submission:

"Police and corrections officers fail to

provide adequate protection from the violent minority. Cases have been

reported of Government officials

themselves harassing and raping Vietnamese

women, and offering protection in exchange

for sexual favours."
