10. About 86% of all the arrivals between 1980 and 1993 were
ethnic Vietnamese. In 1979, only 19% of arrivals were Vietnamese and the rest were Chinese. Since the mid 1980s,
the balance between north and south Vietnamese has also
changed with the proportion of northerners steadily
increasing. In 1984, 28% came from North Vietnam. The proportion of northerners increased to 86% during 1989 and most had left Vietnam for economic reasons. Despite the pressure of arrivals, no-one seeking asylum in Hong Kong and pending determination of his status, has been turned away.
