WORLD CONFERENCE ON HUMAN RIGHTS: VIENNA, 14-25 JUNE
1.
Ian Deane will no doubt be reporting on his participation in our Delegation to the World Conference. I do not think he had a great deal of Hong Kong-specific work to do there, but I should nevertheless like to record our gratitude to the Hong Kong Government for sending him, because he proved to be a very valuable asset to us.
2.
There were often a number of simultaneous activities going on at the Conference, each of which had to be covered. Some of these were quite boring, and I am afraid we took shameless advantage of Ian's willingness to do anything that was useful to the Delegation. At the same time, his unshakeable good humour helped to keep us going when things looked black. Please pass on my warmest thanks to him.
3.
On a different subject, our Hong Kong Department raised with me again before the World Conference the question of a visit by me to Hong Kong. I remain willing to do this if you and they think it would be useful, and if the ever-crowded diary permits. Do let me know if you would indeed like me to
come.
your ever, joun
