Between the time of my release from prison in April 1991 until I left for the U.S. in August 1992, I did the following: in March 1992, I applied for a permit to hold a one man demonstration, and for almost half a month thereafter I was followed and monitored by the police. To commemorate the May 1st International Labour Day, I went for a outing in the countryside with some friends. On June 3, my wife and I took a stroll around Tiananmen Square, and I was arrested. I had some discussions with a group of friends on the labour situation in China. I also gave a few foreign newspaper interviews. If all these things were illegal, then I fully admit to having done done them in the past and I cannot promise that I will not do them again in the future.
I hope that the above statement has clarified some of the grosser distortions and inaccuracies surrounding my case and that it has helped to re- establish the basic facts. I also hope that my having remained silent over the past few weeks will have helped lessen the sense of confrontation and antagonism and opened up opportunities for renewed negotiations towards a solution. I want to return to my country, my health is not good, and I have neither the inclination nor the energy to make trouble for anyone, still less to make a fool of them. There is really no reason, therefore, to make an imaginary enemy out of me.
