Dear Jonathan.

World Conference on Human Rights (WCHR)

Thank

you for your letter of 19 March 1993. We take it that there is по problem with at least one representative from Hong Kong participating in

the

WCHR

as part of the UK delegation. We should be grateful if you would confirm this by return of fax so as to enable us to answer the various enquiries on this subject, which now include a Legislative Council Question by Miss Christine Loh for 31 March 1993.

We would like to send two representatives a legal officer from the Attorney General's Chambers and a policy officer from this Branch.

This is because the issues to be covered or any rebuttal may touch on both the legal and policy aspects, for example, whether our legislation is or is not consistent with the Bill of Rights, or whether the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW) should be extended to Hong Kong. We therefore would be much obliged if you could lobby for us as you kindly suggested. We realise that this may take a few days but that should not be a problem provided that a quick positive answer to paragraph 1 above could be given first.

matter.

we are most grateful for your assistance in this

Yours ever

(Mrs Jennie Chok
