1.

Thank you for your letter of 30th September.

2. You raised the question of the request of the next-of-kin to have a UK Government representative present at future meetings. As you say, at such meetings the Hong Kong Immigration Department are the representatives of the UK Government, and are fully qualified to speak on its behalf. We do not feel that any extra representation would be warranted. However, if necessary, I would be happy for you to pass on my name as a contact addressee in the FCO.

3. Reconsideration of our policy on the renewal of the compensation claim is presently on hold, until the import of recent political developments in Russia becomes clearer. In the meantime, I will be raising with the other FCO departments involved the question of pursuing the compensation claim with the Korean Government.

4. I will keep you informed of any further developments.

Yours ever,

W A Wyver

Hong Kong Department

I am Jonathan Marshall's successor.
