HONG KONG/REPUBLIC OF KOREA AIR SERVICES
1.
Air services talks were held in Hong Kong from 23-25 March between a Hong Kong Government delegation, led by myself, and a Korean delegation. We agreed a new separated Hong Kong/Republic of Korea Air Services Agreement as well as increased capacity and other arrangements on the Hong Kong/Korea route which will benefit Cathay Pacific Airways and Air Hong Kong (the Hong Kong cargo airline).
2. Unfortunately the present strained relations between ourselves and the PRC mean that it could well be sometime before the new ASA can formally come into force. However, we have arranged for the new ASA and the improved arrangements to come into force administratively from last week. This means that the Hong Kong Government (as with an increasing number of its partners) will, from a practical point of view, be dealing with its own air services relations with Korea.
