The definition of "companies" was, in fact, one of the most difficult issues raised during the negotiations. The French insisted on exact reciprocity аз definition of "company". After consultation with the Crown Solicitor, the Hong Kong delegation were satisfied that in practice, the existing definition, although not perfect, would cover most Hong Kong companies likely to benefit from an IPPA.
We would, of course, explain to the Chinese side the amended definition of "company" in the usual
explanatory paper.
