Dear lod,

JLG XXVIII: POSSIBLE TRIP TO CAMBRIDGE

1. As recorded in UKRep JLG telno 311, Guo Fengmin has confirmed that the 7-9 December dates are acceptable. I mentioned to him at the dinner that we were considering some sort of outing at the end of the meeting. He suggested that this should not be far from London. I asked whether he had been to Cambridge which was

He said that he not much more than one hour away from London.

had not, but Luo Jiahuan (who has of course served in London) warmly recommended Cambridge as a possible visit.

2.

I think therefore that we have sufficient basis for setting up a visit there. I should be grateful to know whether you would now like me to contact the Master of Churchill College to propose a lunch or a dinner in the College. I can see the advantage of a lunch in getting people back to London in good time. I will therefore propose that as the first option, but I need to know whether, if he suggests dinner instead, Information Department can arrange transport to get us back to London that evening.

3.

I am of course conscious that Churchill College is not part

The link with of the great architectural heritage of Cambridge. Sir Winston Churchill and the fact that the Master is particularly interested in China do however provide a reasonable peg on which to hang inclusion of that College in a programme. But the substance of the visit to the city should of course take in the main traditional sights. This could no doubt include the Fitzwilliam Museum which (if I recall correctly) has an Oriental collection though this may be principally Korean.

4.

Over to you. I look forward to hearing further.

ever

Your

Hut
