Dear Hugh,
Thank you for your fax with its proposition about the Chinese members of the Joint Liaison Group. We would be delighted to host the group for a meal at Churchill but there is a problem with respect to myself. I will be in New York at that time with several others from the University talking to Alumni at a formally organised event that cannot be rescheduled. I expect to leave for New York on Wednesday the 8th and return on Saturday 11th.
I am sure that we could make arrangements for someone else to host the meal, however, perhaps the Vice Master, Dr Mark Goldic, or my predecessor Sir Hermann Bondi. Please let me know what you think. I have not checked their diaries.
We recently hosted a dinner for the Chilcan ambassador and some other VIPS from Chile and it all went very well - particularly as the Foreign Office paid the bill!. I am afraid a source of funding is necessary as the College does not have funds for such events. The FO seemed to regard our rates as very reasonable.
I look forward to hearing from you and very much hope that we can do something to help the Chinese enjoy their visit to Cambridge.
