JLG XXVIII: POSSIBLE VISIT TO CAMBRIDGE
1.
I have spoken to Peter Ricketts about your letter of 26 October to Rod Bunten. We have considered the attractions of the "safer" option of booking a restaurant rather than the college, but feel that it is still worth going for the latter which should make more of an impression on the Chinese side. We agree with you that it would be perfectly acceptable for either the vice Master or the former Master to host a meal. Would it be possible to rope in a university sinologist or two? We also agree that lunch would be preferable to dinner.
2.
In arranging the trip, we think it would probably be simpler for you to continue using the channel you have already established with Professor Broers and also to liaise directly with OVIS by fax about the lunch as well as other aspects of the visit. I understand from Rod that OVIS, who have a branch office in Cambridge for exactly this sort of visit, know of the intention to set up a visit but have so far not been given any details of your plans. Rod has spoken to Mrs Jennifer Pearce who will make the necessary arrangements when she hears from you.
3.
Although prediction is dangerous, it now looks a bit less likely that we shall have a breakdown of the talks to coincide with the JLG. But 8 December remains, as you know, a potentially significant date!
