1. Could the Department possibly help me with booking a room during my visit to London? The new UK subsistence arrangements make this rather more complicated than before, as one is supposed to stay in one of a number of hotels which offer "Government rates".

So could someone please telephone the Charing Cross Hotel (071 8301 7282) ask if they have a single room with bath available for four nights from Sunday 5 December at the Government rate (about £47,50), and if so book for me. then confirm with a fax from here (credit card etc).

If the hotel is full, could you please ask Travel Accounts Unit (Alan Gee: 210 4106) whether I could exceptionally be allowed to stay at my club (Travellers'), as time will be very tight and other hotels are further away. If so could you please call and see if they have a room with bath available (tel: 930 8688).

4. I am sorry to burden you with this, particularly at such a busy time; but it is very difficult to sort eveything out from here.
