PART IV.

APPLICATION OF CONVENTIONS TO EXISTING SHIPS

Article 18

Regulation 3 which is referred to in the answer to Article 1 provides that the Regulations shall not apply to any ship registered in Hong Kong before their coming into force untfi such ship

untfi such ship undergoes a major overhaul or any alternation ог addition which involves an alteration in the tonnage

measurement.

Existing ships transferring

transferring to the Hong Kong register since the date of coming into operation of the Regulations are subject to the Regulations and are brought up to standard at the time of re-registry. However, exemptions may. be granted on items which do not affect the health of persons on board but which by their nature would be impractical and unreasonable to request the owners to comply with, provided they meet the requirements of the International Labour Conventions. There ace a few exceptions to this where British ships been transferred to the Hong Kong register without visiting Hong Kong, and it is possible that some of those were exempted from the United Kingdom Regulations by virtue of having been on a British register before the United Kingdom Regulations came

into force.
