1. The British side would like to inform the Chinese side that
Hong Kong Government intend to make an approach to the Finance
Committee of the Legislative Council for approval of the
financial commitment to hold the 1997 annual meetings of the
IMF/IBRD in Hong Kong. This approach has been approved by the
Governor in Council.

If the Finance Committee give their approval, the way will be
clear for the formal application to be made to the IMF/IBRD.
This will, in accordance with the way forward agreed previously,
take the form of a formal letter of application from the People's
Republic of China and supporting letters from both the United
Kingdom and Hong Kong. The terms of the application and the
supporting letters will need to be discussed by our respective
Executive Directors in the Bank/Fund.
3.
We will, as agreed, continue to keep the Chinese side
informed of developments.
