2. China's recent announcement to move into a market-based economy and to further open the economy to the outside world will enable it to grow faster. Hong Kong will benefit as before from the strong growth of China's economy.

And, more importantly, the Chinese Government is committed as always to adhere to the Sino-British Joint Declaration and the Basic Law of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region with the aim of guaranteeing a smooth transition and maintaining Hong Kong's stability and prosperity regardless of what will happen in the years to come. This is the most important factor for maintaining people's confidence in Hong Kong. In this context, we are confident that nothing can alter the bright long-term prospects for Hong Kong.
