The Fourth World Conference on Women, Beijing 1995

Α number of non-governmental organisations and Legislative Council members have drawn our attention to the fourth World Conference on Women to be held in Beijing, 1995.

They would like to know the Hong Kong Government's position in this conference, eg. whether Hong Kong officials will attend and what official view will be presented.

the

We are aware that the Conference is convened by UN General Assembly to review and appraise the progress achieved in the implementation of the

Nairobi Forward-looking Strategies for the Advancement of Women Toward the year 2000 (NFLS). The NFLS were formulated at the World Conference to Review and Appraise the Achievements of the UN Decade for Women held at Nairobi in 1985 and subsequently endorsed by the UN General Assembly. However, we have no records of representatives from the Hong Kong Government attending the Conference in 1985. We also do not know the role and position of the UK Government in relation to the Conference.

To enable us to respond to public enquires, I should be grateful if you could provide us with further relevant information on the Conference. For example, did the UK Government participate in the 1985 Conference, and was there any Hong Kong officials? What was the UK's official line? Was Hong Kong committed in any way to the implementation of the Nairobi Foward-looking strategies? Will the UK Government participate in the 1995 Conference, and what official views will be presented? In what way will UK's dependent territories, including Hong Kong, be involved?
