Further to my earlier letter, the Interaction Council has
pressed me very strongly to be in Shanghai when my report on Africa is presented so I have decided to go. I shall leave London on 10th May on the Cathay Pacific flight CX 250 leaving Heathrow at 18.30 and arriving in Hong Kong at 14.25 on Tuesday 11th May.
If it is convenient to Chris Patten, I should be very happy
to stay with him on the night of Tuesday 11th May so that he can brief me, and leave for Shanghai on the following day.
There is a Dragonair flight which departs Hong Kong at 15.50 and arrives in Shanghai at 17.55.
I would also propose to go to Beijing with the rest of the Group on Sunday 16th May to meet the Chinese leadership, returning directly from Beijing to this country, with Air
France via Paris, on Tuesday 18th May.
I should mention that I shall be accompanied throughout the whole visit by my son Michael Callaghan.
