Press freedom/Ming Pao reporter?
Hong Kong's free and energetic press is one of the key aspects of its way of life. It is protected in the Joint
Declaration and the Basic Law.
Know that recent cases involving Hong Kong journalists working in China have caused concern. In the latest case of the Ming Pao reporter, we have asked the Chinese authorities for clarification of the facts. We are keeping in close touch with the newspaper and will consider whether there is more we can do once we know the facts.

Did you raise Human Rights?
Yes. There is much concern in Britain about abuses of
I human rights, and also about the situation in Tibet. brought this to Mr Qian's attention, as I do whenever we
meet.
What international/regional issues?
Security Council current issues, including Lockerbie on which a draft Resolution is being tabled today. Cambodia.
Non-proliferation. Reform of the UN itself.
What are the hold-ups in the JLG?
There is much work that remains to be done to ensure continuity in laws and to conclude agreements with other countries on air services, investment protection and legal matters. Very technical matters, but essential to Hong Kong's continued success as an international centre for
business and communications.
