Southern Line Option

Being 1.4 km shorter than the Northern Line Option, this alignment has the additional advantage of having one more "anchor" ground at Lung Kwu Chau, thus reducing much difficulty in engineering work. It also has more bends and less straight than its northern counterpart, providing the passengers with more picturesque views.

However, there are two disadvantages for this option. Firstly, the construction cost is comparatively high. Secondly, Inner Lingding island is a nature reserve region. There would be much planning work to do in regard to the alignment on this island So as to minimise the adverse effect on natural environment.

Recommended_Option

In choosing the preferred option among the five, can notice that there are marked disadvantages in Options A, B and C while the Northern and Southern Lines are the options with greater significance. From Table 1, it can be seen that the Northern Line Option outdoes the Southern Line Option in respect of land development, environmental protection, tourism promotion and construction cost. However, the latter option is 1.4 km shorter than the former. Taking account of all factors as well as the comments from local governments, this Report recommends that the Northern Line Option should be adopted.
