Proposed Zhuhai Hong Kong Bridge

In March 1993, the Mayor of Zhuhai announced a proposal

to build a 52 km bridge at an estimated cost of RMB 10 billion, linking Zhuhai with Tuen Mun. According to some media reports, the Zhuhai Municipal Government will contact Hong Kong Government officially once the project has been approved by Beijing.

At a private dinner in Hong Kong in April, Mr Cai Guang-cheng, Vice-Mayor of Zhuhai spoke to SPEL about the project. and handed over some notes on it (Annex A). He indicated that planning was well-advanced and construction at the Zhuhai end would start later this year for full completion in 1997/98. He

According to Annex A, the bridge will be 38 metres wide and provide eight regular traffic lanes. The traffic flow will initially be 12,000 vehicles a day and increase to 30,000 in the

third year of operation.

On the face of it, the proposed bridge, together with Gordon Wu's super-highway, would complete a stratigic trunk highway loop around the month of the Pearl River and provide additional focus on Hong Kong as the predominant springboard into
