2.19 A summary of recent foreign investment in the province is provided on Figures 2.4 and 2.5. The continuing growth in investments and the domination of Hong Kong entrepreneurs is clear.

Infrastructure

Transport

2.20 The emerging patterns of transport

infrastructural developments within Guangdong are illustrated on Figures 2.6 and 2.7. The clear focus of these works is the Pearl River Delta. As yet, although much talked about, links between Guangdong and the rest of China are receiving lower priority. The main modes for short distance traffic are roads and the inland waterways - roads now dominating the passenger market. The main mode for long distance traffic is rail. These divisions are likely to continue. Many new ports are being planned - the proposed construction programme may, however, be over ambitious - the lack of deep water is an enormous problem. Much will depend on the successful expansion of Hong Kong's own port. There are also plans for a new international airport to the north of Baiyun in Guangzhou and for expanding Shenzhen Airport. These will serve mainly regional needs. They should not challenge Hong Kong's dominant position in the market for international traffic and are, indeed, more likely to reinforce it by building a hierarchy of facilities with Hong Kong at its apex. They should actively contribute to Hong Kong's growth as an international hub.

Utilities
