A public opinion poll conducted by the Tainan Committee of the "Clean elections save Taiwan Organisation", over 80% of

respondents said they expected bribery to occur during the mayoral elections; 60% expected village chiefs to facilitate

vote buying, and 45% said they were unsure whether they

themselves would accept a bribe (Pacific Daily News 21 Oct).

DPP members staged a demonstration to protest at the

cutting by municipal officials of the wires of the underground

Greater Keelung Democratic Station Cable TV network (CT 27 Oct).

Shih Ming (also known as Shih Chao-hui), who had

admitted illegally entering Taiwan aboard a fishing boat, was arrested, together with 4 other dissidents charged with

harbouring him, and subsequently released on bail, also together

with the 4 others. Shih, Chairman of the Taiwan Independence

Association, had been living in Japan for more than 40 years

(UDN 27 Oct).

The Supreme Court in Taipei upheld the death sentence (the first for 13 years) on Hsu Wen-ta, convicted of smuggling
