There was considerable nervousness in the Kuomintang
about the Party's prospects in the elections for Mayors and
County Magistrates to be held on 27 November. Earlier, the
Kuomintang's failure to maintain its majority on the LY Agenda
Committee has given rise to fears that decisions on legislative priorities would be subject to the influence of the DPP and
China New Party (CT 30 September).

The number of DPP deputies in the LY rose to 53, with the addition of Chen Che-nan, who was expelled from the Kuomintang last December for advocating "one China, one Taiwan"
(CDN 5 Oct).

The DPP LY Caucus agreed to call for direct
presidential elections to be held by the end of 1994 (CT 7 Oct).

A National Association of Independent Politicians was
established by a group of Independent LY and National Assembly members with the aims of promoting the principle of "Taiwan's future as top priority" and helping independent politicians in
their election campaigns. LY member Yeh Hsien-hsiu was elected Chairman and Minister without Portfolio Huang Shih-cheng was elected Convenor of the Association's Consultancy Group (CT 18
Oct).

A UDNHK report from Taipei (16 Nov) said that the China New Party and Socialist Democratic Party had agreed to merge.
64.
Lien Chan declared assets estimated at more than
NT$14bn in accordance with the "sunshine law" on disclosure of
the wealth of persons holding public office. Lien is the wealthiest of 90 persons making disclosures, followed by
Minister of the Interior Wu Po-hsiung with assets estimated at
NT$3.05bn (UDN 10 Oct).
