Evans as saying that Australia was considering selling uranium

to Taiwan through the US, adding that any deal would have to accord with Australia's existing policy and nuclear

non-proliferation objectives.

German Economics Minister Mollemann said, during a

visit to Taiwan in mid-November, that the German Trade Office would be upgraded when the present German representative leaves

Visitors to Taiwan included: British Trade Minister Richard Needham, who attended a ceremony to mark the upgrading of the office of the Anglo-Taiwan Trade Committee to "British Trade and Cultural Office"; a delegation of British Parliamentary Foreign Affairs Committee; the Polish Minister of Industry & Trade; African National Congress Vice-President Walter Susulu; former US Defence Secretary Caspar Weinberger; former President Bush; and CIA officials who reportedly briefed Premier Lien Chan on developments on the mainland. According to Foreign Minister Fredrick Chien, the call by the Foreign Affairs Committee on the Foreign Ministry in Taipei was the first such meeting with a delegation of the British Parliament for 32 years

Taiwan's foreign exchange reserves at the end of August amounted to US$83.72bn, making Taiwan the third largest holder of foreign exchange, following Germany and Japan (EDN 16 Oct).
