SUPPLEMENT ON TAIWAN
(Reports seen 21 September to 22 November 1993)
i)
Chiao Jen-ho is to take over from Cheyne Chiu as
Secretary-General of the Straits Exchange Federation. A meeting with its mainland counterpart in early November produced meagre results, but the mainland's demand for the return of hijackers will be considered at a further meeting in December (paras 1-3)
ii)
While hoping for the extension of air service rights to
Hong Kong after current arrangements expire in 1995, Taiwan is reportedly also exploring the possibility of flights to Macau. Legislation on relations with the Hong Kong and Macau SARS is
expected to be submitted for examination by the Legislative Yuan in 1994 and to be adopted in 1996 (paras 18-19).

Vincent Siew represented Taiwan at the APEC Meeting in Seattle (para 26).
iv)
The Dalai Lama spoke in support of Taiwan's membership
of the UN. He may visit Taiwan in early 1994 (para 40).

Taiwan wants to host the Asian Games in 2002 (para 42).
The office of the Anglo-Taiwan Trade Committee was
renamed British Trade and Cultural Office. British Trade
Minister Richard Neeham and the House of Commons Foreign Affairs Committee visited Taiwan (para 57).

In a public opinion poll in Taiwan 45% of respondents said they were not sure whether they would accept a bribe for their vote in the local elections (para 65).
