According to a CD report (26 Oct) the number of

economic crimes involving businessmen from Hong Kong and Macau has increased recently in Wuhan. This year there were said to have been 23 cases of economic crime, each of which involved

over Ylm. Thirteen of these had been committed by people and companies from Hong Kong and Macau. A Hong Kong publishing house was said to have pocketed Y12.5m after coaxing 5 state-run enterprises in Wuhan to sign contracts for buying steel

products.

Following reports by western news agencies of unrest

among Muslim inhabitants in Qinghai, Beijing Review (1 Nov)

published a report saying that Public Security departments in

the provincial capital, Xining had taken "lawful measures to

stop illegal demonstrations" and outlawed the organisations reponsible. The organisations were said to have occupied

mosques by force and organised demonstrations under the pretext of opposing the publication of a Taiwan published book which had been reissued by the Sichuan Fine Arts publishing house.

According to western reports, the book contained a picture of a

pig next to a praying Muslim.
