The feasibility of constructing a railway, to be operated on a commercial basis, between Zhangzhou in Fujian and Chaozhou in eastern Guangdong was discussed at a recent conference with representatives of US and Canadian companies

Shanghai

An official ceremony was held on 23 October to mark the opening to traffic of the Yangpu Bridge, described as the world's longest cable stay bridge (7658m long). In a speech at the opening ceremony, Zhu Rongji spoke of the pride which he felt at this achievement of the Shanghai working class, conveyed greetings on behalf of Jiang Zemin and Li Peng, and called for grasping the opportunity to deepen reform and speed up
development (LD, PD 24 Oct).

The expressway under construction from Nanjing to Shanghai, a distance of 274km, is due to be completed by the end
of 1996 (Xinhua 29 Sept).
Other Areas
H1.
A coastal long distance marine radio navigation system,
called the Changhe No. 2, has recently been completed. The East and North China sea sections of the system have been connected and put into trial operation. When fully in operation, the system will cover a band of 1,000 miles along the Chinese coast line and will guide ships in an area totalling 8 million sq km from 140 degrees east and the Japan Sea to the Nansha (Spratly) Islands (Xinhua 28 Sept).
