Following completion of the Overseas Chinese City

section of the project, the second stage of the West Shenzhen Sewage Council is expected to be completed by spring next year

(SSZD 14 Nov).

A ceremony was held on 15 November to mark the opening of the rail line from Pinghu on the Guangzhou-Shenzhen line to Yantian Port on Mirs Bay (SSZD 16 Nov).

Shenzhen Airways began operations on 14 October. It will operate 11 routes with Boeing 737-300 aircraft (ie to

Peking, Shanghai, Zhengzhou, Haikou, Chengdu, Hangzhou, Nanjing,

Xiamen, Wenzhou, Yantai and Meixian). (SD 15 Oct).

The lead story in SD of 18 October concerned the

improved performance of the state-owned Shenzhen Foreign Trade

Corporation, which had adopted various reforms and reduced its losses by Y200m last year.

The 9th Joint Conference of chairmen of People's Congress Standing Committees of 14 cities (Harbin, Changchun,

Shenyan, Dalian, Qingdao, Xi'an, Nanjing, Chengdu, Wuhan,

Ningbo, Chongqing, Xiamen, Guangzhou and Shenzhen) was addressed

by Shenzhen People's Congress Standing Committee Chairman Li Haitong. Li described Shenzhen's experience over the last year or more of enacting legislation, saying that the laws passed

embodied experience from the 10 years of reform, quoted the

practice necessary for the Special Economic Zone while moving forward in areas still not clarified by state laws and
