inundated by 7,690,800 cu m of water over a 17-hour period.

Singapore Airlines opened a weekly freight service to

Shenzhen on 1 October (SSZD 2 Oct).

D14.

The municipal tax bureau launched an investigation in order to collect unpaid taxes of Y6,440,000, mainly from

individual enterprises, and property tax of more than Y100m. Fines of Y2,480,000 were imposed on 1,805 businesses which had

not complied with tax regulations. Tax assessments were

increased on 4,929 businesses, resulting in a 54% increase in

taxes due from them. Property taxes collected, together with fines and overdue payments, amounted to Y120m (SSZD 4 Oct).

The Chinese Securities Regulatory Commission imposed a

fine of Ylm on the Bao'an Group for irregularities in a takeover bid for a Shanghai company, Yanzhong Industrial (SSZD 23 Oct).

D16.

The text of the regulations on the control of the

cultural market in the Shenzhen SEZ (governing recreational and

amusement undertakings, including dance halls and karaoke

establishments), adopted by the Municipal People's Congress Standing Committee on 10 September, were published in SSZD of 9

October.

D17.

An article in SSZD of 20 October described the

development of private legal practices in Shenzhen and the regulations governing their activities. There are now 15 legal

practices in the municipality, with 327 lawyers, of which 158

are full-time lawyers.

D18.

The Director of SSZD announced in Peking that from the

beginning of 1994 the size of the paper would be expanded from

the present 12 to 16 pages and that it would be printed in

Chengdu and Wuhan as well as in Shenzhen, Peking and Shanghai as

at present (SSZD 9 Nov).
