B16.

The provincial government has decided that from 1 January all of its documents addressed to municipal and county governments and other units directly subordinate to it will be published in the Guangdong Government Gazette. According to a report in SD (13 Sept) and a subsequent press commentary (SD 3 Oct) this will increase the transparency of policies, facilitate supervision by the masses and have beneficial effects on the management of enterprises.

According to an official of the Housing Reform Office in Guangzhou, the average living space of residents of the city is now 8.51 sq m, over double that before the reform and open policies were launched (SD 4 Oct).

B18.

An inspection carried out by seven teams on behalf of the provincial party committee and government in August found good progress in most parts of the province towards meeting the objectives of "greening Guangdong" set by the provincial party and government in 1985. The teams inspected forestry work in various parts of the province. A conference held by the party committee and government on 29 September concluded that the objectives set for 1995 would be achieved by the end of this year but also drew attention to inadequacies of the forestry sector in meeting the demands of the market (SD 5 Oct).

A meeting was held in Guangzhou on 7 October to mark the establishment of the Guangdong Outstanding Journalists' Foundation. It was addressed by provincial Party Propaganda Chief Yu You jun who called on journalists to promote socialism, reform and opening up and by Hong Kong businessman (and Honorary President of the Foundation) Lau Ying-fu who announced a donation of Y10,000. Another Hong Kong businessman, Yiu Mei-leung, and Ma Man-kei from Macau, who are also Honorary Vice-Prsidents, sent greetings. The Foundation will award prizes to outstanding journalists (SD 8 Oct).
