POSSIBLE DISCUSSION WITH SHELL ON CHINA
1. I have seen Mr Wilkinson's minute to you of 2 November about a possible discussion with planners from Shell International on China, and your comment that you think this would be well worth doing.
2.
I agree. The original idea which we discussed (and which I later discussed with Mr Wilkinson) would have involved bringing together a number of corporate planners for a discussion on the future of China. But that of course presupposes that a number of companies have a strategic planning process as elaborate as that of Shell. While we are trying to establish that, a bilateral meeting with Shell planners would be well worthwhile.
3.
If you wished me to do so, I would be very happy to put together a little team for the purpose. I have no doubt that it would be a mind-stretching process. In our contacts with academics they have a tendency to focus on the individual trees at the expense of the wood.
be interested to see how far Mr Rainbow and his colleagues, given the breadth of the ground they have to cover, are able to underpin their strategic scenarios by detailed study of the countries involved.
