Convention on the Prevention of Marine Pollution from Land-based Soues requires Parties to eliminate pollution in a specified Maritime Area from land-based sources by certain substances and to limit strictly pollution by certain other substances. The Convention entered into force for the UK on 6 May 1978 and was extended to Guernsey on 6 April 1978 and Jersey on 27 March 1980. It does not cover any other Dependent Territories.

Convention on the Physical Protection of Nuclear Material which aims to facilitate the safe transport of nuclear material and establishes effective measures for its physical protection. The UK ratified the Convention on 6 November 1991. Dependent Territories are being consulted as to whether they wish the UK's ratification of the Convention extended to them.

United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea which sets up a comprehensive new legal regime for the sea and oceans and, as far as environmental provisions are concerned, to establish material rules concerning environmental standards as well as enforcement provisions dealing with pollution of the marine environment. The UK has yet to sign.

Agreement for Co-operation in Dealing with Pollution of the North Sea by Oil and Other Harmful Substances which requires Parties to co-operate in informing each other of casualties or oil or harmful substances in the area and in requiring masters of the ships and pilots of aircraft registered in their territories to report such incidents. The Convention entered into force for the UK, and the Bailiwicks of Jersey and Guernsey on 1 September 1989. It is not applicable to other Dependent Territories.

International Tropical Timber Agreement which establishes the International Tropical Timber Organization to provide an effective framework for co-operation and consultation between countries producing and consuming tropical timber. The Convention entered into force for the UK on 1 April 1985. It has not been extended to Dependent Territories.

Basel Convention on the Control of Transboundary Movements ;of Hazardous Wastes and their Disposal which introduces a global system of environmental controls on the movements of hazardous wastes. Movements are not permitted between Parties and Non-Parties. Parties to the Convention may choose not to allow imports of waste and such movements as are allowed are subject to a system of prior informed consent. The UK signed the Convention on 6 October 1989, but has yet to ratify. Dependent Territories are being consulted about their inclusion in the UK's ratification when the time comes.

Convention on the Transboundary Effects of Industrial Accidents which applies to the prevention of, preparedness for and response to industrial accidents capable of causing transboundary effects, including the effects of such accidents caused by natural disasters. The UK signed the Convention on 18 March 1992, but has yet to ratify. The Convention is essentially a European Convention and has not been ratified on behalf of Dependent Territories.
