Annette Lee is quite right about North Korea. We recognise both North and South Korea, although we do not have diplomatic relations with the former. Both are UN members.
3. States that are not recognised by HMG are as follows:
- Taiwan (recognised by South Africa and an assortment of about 30 other small countries)
- the South African Bantustans (Transkei, Ciskei etc.) which are only recognised by South Africa
the "Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus", recognised only by Turkey
- Palestine, which is recognised by about 100 mostly non-aligned, including Arab, countries.
4.
One difficult case at the moment is the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (FRY) which consists of Serbia and Montenegro. Although there is de facto recognition (there is a FRY embassy in London and a British embassy in Belgrade), the UK does not officially recognise the FRY. I attach a minute by EAU which details this position.

You may also find the attached list giving the UK view of independent states useful. The list is intended for guidance only, and should not be treated as definitive.
