Li Langing said that "serious consequences of

actions by the British side would naturally include

consequences for trade" and that if the British Government persisted in its course Sino-British trade relations "would inevitably be affected" (WWP 19 March 1993).

In his report to the NPC on the work report of the government, Li Peng said that the British government must bear the entire responsibility for all the serious consequences of obstacles which it had created (March

1993).

Jiang Zemin said that Britain obtained profits of US$4-5bn annually from Hong Kong, which were remitted by British management stationed in the territory (WWP 20 March

1993).

Following Li Lanqing's statement that Sino-British relations would inevitably be affected by the question of Hong Kong policy, Qian Qichen added in clarification that the Chinese side had no wish to seek any economic or other impact on Sino-British relations. Qian said that actions

taken by the Governor had caused trouble in Hong Kong and

affected its stability and prosperity; Li had meant that,

if this were to continue, Sino-British economic and trade relations would be damaged, but this would not be the fault

of the Chinese side (HK Economic Journal 24 March 1993).

Li Peng at a press conference on 31 March 1993, said that Sino-British economic relations would be

adversely affected if the political row worsened (HK press

1 April 1993).
