rose 20% last year and there has been a strong revival of

interest in the market. In October 1992, Mr Needham and Lord

Prior led a 100-company trade mission organised by the

China-Britain Trade Group and we will be following up the

success of that mission this year.

We would regret it if the Chinese authorities allowed our

differences over the question of Hong Kong to affect broader

relations between Britain and China. Trade and economic links

between Britain and China are growing strongly. cooperation is in the interests of both countries. We want to see it continue to develop. We presume that China, which currently enjoys a£500 million trade surplus with the UK a year

would wish to do the same.
