You repeated you had taken note of what Yang said. You reiterated we should leave it up to the police to maintain public order on the ground. You rebutted Yang's allegations that we were insincere and that we wished to humiliate Chinese
leaders. While we clearly had different positions on this question you assured Yang there was no question of insincerity
on our part.

Yang's points were largely predictable and similar to representations they made before to us around this time of the year, except that this time they made specific complaints about anti-Chinese posters. (Shu Jianping phoned me on 19 May
and complained about slogans/signs put up near a Japanese department store in Causeway Bay and the road divide nearby. These were removed (8 in total) by the relevant department late yesterday afternoon on legitimate road safety grounds).
