Statistics gleaned in the first four months of 1993 confirm the trend which commenced in mid 1992 reflecting an increase in
increase in reports of alleged corruption. Compared with the same period in 1992, corruption reports have increased by a little over 28% across the board, with a 34% increase in reports concerning the police, 22% in those concerning other Government departments and 27% in reports concerning the private sector. Arising from such reports the Operations Department carries a current caseload of 1,043 investigations. There is no simple explanation of the increase in non-corruption reports. It is probably based
based in part on recent self generated publicity by the Community Relations Department and the results obtained from high profile cases like the arrests for car smuggling on the border.
4.
A recent telephone survey conducted by the Community Relations Department revealed that 62% of respondents believed corruption would get worse between now and 1997 and 70% were confident that ICAC would deal
with it.
