Three days ago the sixteenth round of talks began in Beijing - and the grat game of bluff and counter-bluff started once more. Chris Patten has said there are now only weeks, not months left for the negotiations to bear fruit. He urgently needs to know what the Chinese are thinking.
If you were commander of the Hong Kong station, Chris Patten would come to you wouldn't he, and he'd say, I desperately need to know some things for the negotiations that are taking place at the moment.
......In a hypothetical case, he would look for every piece of information that was available including secret intelligence.
Q:Now the aquisition of secret intelligence in terms of what it is that the Chinese negotiating teams are thinking about, can only be acquired presumably through bugging.
I think this question has to be avoided. Undertandable caution yet MI6 has an established track record in penetrating the oppositions's defences. Richard Post is a former CIA officer who now works as a private detetictive in Hong Kong. He straddles the border with China by also being an advisor to the Chinese Intelligence Agency - the Public Security Ministry. He knows it and he's done it all when it comes to bugging.
