Once wholly subsidized by the Chinese government, it was taken over three years ago by the Joint Publishing Group (a profit-making left-wing publication syndicate). It is more commercialized than the Wen Wei Po and the Ta Kung Pao, but it is pro-China. Circulation is small in Hong Kong but it is available in China, especially Guangdong province.

United Daily News

Circulation: around 20,000 in Hong Kong

The United Daily news is a leading Taiwan newspaper which launched a Hong Kong edition in mid-1992. More than half its content is allocated to the economic and financial news of Hong Kong, Taiwan and China. Its target for distribution is mainland China. It takes an objective stance on Anglo-Chinese disputes.

TVB has 2 channels, one English (Pearl) and one Chinese (Jade). The Chinese channel attracts over 85% of the local TV audience. Recently, it has become more pro-Peking, but it is not hostile to British policy.

ATV

ATV operates 2 channels, one English (World) and one Chinese (Home). Although the audience of ATV is small, ATV news has a good reputation for its objective attitude to the British and Chinese Governments.

Radio (Television) Hong Kong

RTHK is the Government radio station but it has independent editorial control. It operates 4 Chinese channels aimed at audiences of varying ages. One bilingual channel carries arts programmes. The English Channel (Radio 4) makes extensive use of BBC radio reports and programmes.
