Leading Newspapers in Hong Kong

According to the latest SRH Media Report, there are 10 local newspapers whose circulation covers 1% or more of the Hong Kong population. In order of circulation, these are: Oriental Daily, Sing Pao Daily, Tin Tin Daily, Ming Pao Daily, Hong Kong Daily News, Express, Sing Tao Daily, South China Morning Post, HK Economic Journal and HK Economic Times. Note: non ABC circulations are unreliable.

English:

South China Morning Post Circulation: 110, 140 (ABC)

The SCMP is the leading English language daily newspaper in Hong Kong. Owned by Rupert Murdoch; independent. Generally it

supports the Governor's policies but has in the past been critical of HMG. Although widely read by expatriates, it is not influential with the Chinese speaking community.

Sunday Morning Post

Circulation: 83, 137 (ABC)

From the same stable as the SCMP, but with separate editorial and journalistic staff. It tends to be more investigative and speculative than the SCMP.

The Standard

Circulation: 47, 805 (ABC)

Owned by the Sing Tao group, the Standard is the second English language daily newspaper. It runs a very poor second to the SCMP. Independent but not influential.

Sunday Standard

Circulation: 37,606 (ABC)

Chinese:

Oriental Daily News

Circulation: 600,000 (non ABC)

The largest Chinese daily in the territory. In recent years, its readership has grown to include students and a greater proportion of the middle classes. The newspaper is not notably critical of British and Chinese policies. It has two correspondents in London.
