MR CHRIS PATTEN
DOORSTEP
LONDON 29 JULY 1993
7
We did not spend very much time on that, we had had an opportunity of discussing that at greater length before. My position, as you
know, is that the sooner we can finish those projects the better
for Hong Kong and the better for China. I also have discussed the
impact of the measures which China is taking to secure its own
steady economic progress on Hong Kong, that is a subject which has
been widely debated and obviously a subject in which we are
intensely interested.
If you look to the medium or longer term,
and this is not an intervention in Chinese economic policy, it is
a statement again of the obvious, it must be in the interests of
Hong Kong that China's economy develops at a pace which is
sustainable in a way which does not produce economic distortions
and does not produce hyper-inflation.
So the attempts to have a
balanced economic development, those attempts I hope will succeed in the interests of Hong Kong and the interest of the region.
QUESTION:
Is there unity in the Tory party now?
MR PATTEN:
I am here as Governor of Hong Kong, we have got a by-election in
Hong Kong for the Legislative Council and one for the Regional Council as well and I am sure there is a great deal of interest here, as in Hong Kong, in the outcome.
QUESTION:
But what about Christchurch?
