I have had a very useful meeting with the Foreign Secretary and

another meeting with senior officials. It is in fact the third

meeting that I have had with the Foreign Secretary this month, we

had a substantial meeting early in the month to review policy and

partly as a result of that, as you know, the Foreign Secretary

went to Peking for his meeting with Mr Qian Qichen and then came

and saw us in Hong Kong on his return journey to London.

The meeting today and the meeting with officials has given us the

opportunity of reviewing the progress that has been made in the

continuing talks with the Chinese government about the future

political development of Hong Kong. We have also talked about a

range of other issues affecting the economic well being of Hong

Kong, in particular we have discussed the large number of issues

that we want to see resolved, and satisfactorily resolved, in the

Joint Liaison Group, the JLG has a very great deal of work still

to get through and it is very important that that should be given

as much of an impulse as possible.
