BBC Television Drama Serial on hong kong
Thank you for your fax of 11 August.
I am sure that
Bob Peirce would be delighted to brief Mr. Jackson during the latter's visit to Hong Kong. It is possible that, for much of that time, Bob will be in Peking for successive rounds of talks. But I should also be happy to assist as necessary, and indeed to point Jackson towards anyone else he might find it
useful to meet.
Chris Ozborne tells me he will be on leave when Jackson arrives. He returns on 9 September, and looks forward to seeing Jackson shortly afterwards. Meanwhile, if any help is required from the TC, Rosemary Fowler would gladly provide it.
The prospect of a major drama serial revolving around the future of Hong Kong does not immediately fill me with enthusiasm. Drapa serials require drama. If the BBC chooses to provide this through hypothetical political circumstances, they may end up projecting an unsettling and confidence-eroding image of Hong Kong. But projects of this kind are perhaps inevitable as 1997 approaches. As you say, our interest is to do our best to ensure that those responsible at least have a clear understanding of the facts, and of what HMG and the Hong Kong Government are trying to achieve.
