Dear Mr Hum
I am writing to let you know of changes we have made in our coverage of China. I would be most grateful if you could pass the information to Sir Robin McLaren and to anybody else at the Foreign Office who might be interested..
For years we have had an arrangement with the Australian newspapers, the Age and the Sydney Morning Herald, under which copy written by their Beijing correspondent was sent on to us for use in the Financial Times. This has worked well at times, but we feel that we have recently been under-reporting the China story and that we should step up our coverage. Therefore we have altered the arrangement with the Australian papers so that we have a greater "share" of the correspondent than previously.
Tony Walker has just arrived in Beijing as → first correspondent under this improved arrangement. He has many years of experience as a foreign correspondent for the Australian papers and
the Australian papers and for the Financial Times, most recently in the Middle East. This is his second posting to Beijing. We regard him as an experienced and valuable Financial Times correspondent.
In London, Alex Nicoll, the Asia Editor, should be your first point of contact if you need to discuss matters Chinese. But naturally I and many other people are also interested in China's extraordinary development.
With thanks for your help,
Yours sincerely
Andrew Gowers Foreign Editor
