BACKGROUND BRIEFING LONDON 22 FEBRUARY 1993

MARK PELLEW:
I think there has been quite a lot of discussion at ambassador
level and this is not a high-profile item as far as this visit is
concerned and certainly nothing that we have seen from the
American side suggests that they regard it as such either.
think we will probably take a decision when we get to Washington
as to how far on our side we go into the detail on that.
I
I would just add that, as Gus said at the beginning, of course
there will be an opportunity for a meeting with Secretary Les
It Aspin and the Director of Central Intelligence, Jim Wolseley.
is more likely, I would think, that this subject would come up in
that forum.
QUESTION:
To come back to Northern Ireland, you said any help would be
welcome but how do you think the Americans can help?
GUS O'DONNELL:
I think what is helpful to us is if they say the right things
about Northern Ireland and the right things are encouraging all
sides to get back to the talks. That is what would help and we
believe that the more information and the more they study the
situation the better. The more they get across to the American
public the reality of the situation the better.
